Notes 2013/2014 season

May 9, 2014

There is still snow on the ground but my measuring stick has fallen so my official/unofficial total is now zero.  A well below average year due to Dec/Jan being excessively poor, though it was very cold. I recently found out that the Summit is moving forward with their Rampart chair installation and I hear there will be more surprises in store for us here at Hyak.  #1 is the need for brush cutting and creek control.  Overall I had another fun season and will be getting my passes for the family this week.

April 29, 2014

The past week SL's were hovering around the 3k - 3.5k level and we received a few inches of new snow and some light rain.  Sunday was snowy most of the day and Alpental is the only remaining area operating. Snow melt down has slowed much but next week is supposed to be a heatwave with temps in eastern WA reaching 90 degrees, and 70's on the west.  This weekend coming up is to be the last for lift service as Alpental closes on Monday May 5th.

April 16, 2014

Last weekend was very nice!  It was sunburn sunny all day, both days but the freezing level stayed low enough that the snow didn't get too mushy, or at least not until late in the afternoon. In the shade it stayed fast and firm all day.  This week it was snowing Tues and Wed mornings at road level, but sticking 3,500' and above. Central will wrap it up this weekend followed by 2 more weekends at Alpental.

TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2014

March 24, 2014

The season has come to an end for Hyak after 7 weeks of operation and the best weekend of the season.  Grooming was finally good and they did a great job on the face making it very fun. Sunshine all weekend, fast snow early and finishing off the day with mash potatoes in sun facing slopes.  After our slow start the season ended up ok, just too bad it was so short and the summit couldn't see to extend for a couple more weeks.  Except for the creek coverage is still good.  Central open for a couple more weeks then Alpental until early May.

TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 2014

March 18, 2014

Snow levels are down and snow has now been falling since Sunday afternoon. We ended up with 8" new Monday morning and now the skies have been clearing.  This is the last weekend of operation coming up and all in all the season has been ok with about 8 weekends of operation. West also closes this weekend as well as night skiing.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2014

March 12, 2014

After more then a week of rain or sunshine we've lost a lot of snow.  Currently this week has been sunshine, temps in the 40s and has led to some great spring riding. Rain is forecast for the weekend then possibly some snow Monday but who knows.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 2014

March 5, 2014

The rain has returned.  This is the final week of night skiing at West so the Summit has begun with the season ending slow shut down.  The snow pattern looks to have finally ended for now and the rain is starting to pack the snow down. We were up to 7' and now 6 1/2' and I figure by the end of the week it will be just below 6'.  Just hope this doesn't last too long as I wouldn't mind some nice warm spring like conditions for a change.

March 3, 2014

February continued with storm after storm and in the end 110" of snow fell which is well above the average for the month of 76".  Snow depth is still a little below average but should be good to get us through the rest of the season.  March 1 was the 3rd annual "Bring On the NEON" day at Hyak but it was so cold and stormy there wasn't as much of a turn out as there could have been. Still fun times in the lodge afterwards with temps outside in the teens, wind blowing and snow falling. The next day the area opened up with 14 degrees and new 'dry' snow.  It was a good, but cold day for riding.  Next week we are to see a warm front move in with temps going to the 40 range.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2014

February 18, 2014

So Feb is rolling in with non-stop snowfall.  This week alone we are supposed to get 5' + of snow which should bring our snowpack to a good operating level. Still not to normal depth, but at least we cover most of the rocks and brush.  Hope to see it continue for awhile.

February 10, 2014

Ok, the frigid tempratures have finally disappeared. We did get more snow over the weekend, but it didn't do much to help with the brush problem at the bottom of the ski area below the water tower.  Currently it is 37 degrees and broken clouds, there is rain in the forecast for Tue/Wed and maybe Thurs but Fri - Mon is forecast SNOW.  The Hidden Valley chair did not run this past weekend but is rumored it will be back up come this holiday weekend (Hyak open Monday).

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2014

February 5, 2014

Frigid tempratures, down into the single digits this week.  Snow predicted this weekend but for now it is clear and COLD.  Hyak opened last week and the Hidden Valley chair broke as soon as it was opened. Many folks (including myself) had to hike out.  I hear it is scheduled to reopen next weekend if they fix the broken parts but I won't hold my breath.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 30, 2014

January 30, 2014

FINALLY, WINTER HAS ARRIVED.
After 2+ weeks of fog/inversion and cold, hard snow we finally have the storm track coming our way and we are getting snow.  14" the past 2 days and more still falling.  Hyak opens Feb 1 and it is going to be interesting with all the 8' brush in the base area.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 2014

January 17, 2014

Back into the same dry weather pattern, clear skies and no hope for snow in the near future. Last weekend we received almost 2' of snow and that resulted in the opening of West, Central and Alpental.  Night skiing kicked off this week and I went Mon/Wed/Thurs and for the most part it was pretty good, but snow is very thin in areas and brush.  Still, good to be up on the hill and riding but for how much longer?

SATURDAY, JANUARY 11, 2014

January 11, 2014

Summit West opened yesterday to light rain but it changed to snow in the afternoon.  Today it is snowing and they are predicted up to 14" tonight and another 14" tomorrow.  Alpental opens tomorrow so hopefully the snow will keep falling and Hyak can open soon.

Nov - Jan

Ok, there were no posts over the past couple months because there was nothing to really speak of.  It was bitter cold in December but very little snow to speak of.  The most snow we had on the ground at one time, but did not all fall at once was maybe 6".  Pathetic and depressing.  Going into January we had around 3" of snow and no opening in site.

New season 2013/2014

Sunday the snowfall began with 2" followed by 1" Monday and another 1" Tuesday morning.  Guess I better get this notebook restarted for the new ski/board season.
